Summer weddings can be SO romantic: blooming flowers and lush gardens, warm moonlit evenings under Japanese lanterns, beach ceremonies...and HEAT.
If you are planning your big day during the cooler seasons of the year, it can be easy to forget that your summer wedding date could be hotter than the hinges of Hell (as my dear mother would say). Here are some creative ways to help you and your guests feel comfortable so the party doesn't wilt in the heat.
1. Provide your guests with non-alcoholic beverages
If you are having an outdoor ceremony on a hot day, providing your guests with hydrating beverages will go a long way to helping them stay cool and comfortable. You could provide water bottles personalized with your wedding date or provide large dispensers or pitchers of water flavored with fruits and herbs.
Here are a couple of suggestions for flavored water, from Lisa Hybarger on Facebook:
Cucumber Mint: Mix in a pitcher: 10 cups of water + 1 cucumber and a lemon, thinly sliced + 1/4 cup fresh finely chopped basil leaf + 1/3 of finely chopped fresh mint leaves. Leave in the refrigerator overnight before serving.. Multiply recipe as required for larger quantities.
Blackberry Sage: Mix in a pitcher : 10 cups of water + 1 cup of blackberries that have been very slightly crushed + 3-4 sage leaves. Leave in refrigerator overnight before serving.
Make your wedding favor a personalized fan that has your wedding date. Or you could print your ceremony program on a fan and put them in cute baskets for guests to take when they arrive. Fans could also look gorgeous incorporated into the table settings.
For yourself, find a gorgeous antique folding fan to use as your “something old”!
3. Give them shade with parasols
I can think of nothing cuter to make your wedding day unique than to provide a basket of parasols to your guests.
You can also get a fancy lace parasol for yourself or your bridesmaids for a very traditional and glamorous look.
4. Provide a selection of facial mists for your guests
Acquire some cute clear spray bottles (avoid the clunky varieties that have the big nozzles on them), some fun labels that you can hand write on, and make your own facial mists. Facial mists cool down the skin and the plus is that you can make a variety of different scented mists! Combine water with different herbs like lavender or mint in the spray bottles. You can even use green tea. You can have a special table just for the mists at your ceremony or reception. Or you can place them in a basket in the rest rooms at your venue.
This is my favorite idea for riding the heat wave theme at your wedding. I would SO love to have had a sundae bar at my wedding but I got married in late October in New England – not exactly the scenario best suited for a sundae bar.
Arrange with your caterer to serve scoops of ice cream (try to procure local homemade ice cream if you can) and then allow your guests to top it with whatever their hearts desire (hot fudge, marshmallow, whipped cream, cherries, jimmies, nuts…). You can even get exotic with things like yogurt chips, granola, fresh fruit, and even cereal.
