Popsicles are becoming all the rage and, like any good trend, the ante has officially been upped to gourmet status. Recipes for popsicles abound on the internet from simple mango popsicles made from pureed mango to complex flavored popsicles with infused herbs and nuts, and even beer.
2. Read a delightful summer book
You might already have your eye on your next read, but you can also get some ideas from Good Reads. Sign up for the web or mobile app to find out what your friends are reading at www.goodreads.com.
The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer
State of Wonder by Ann Patchett
Sisterland: A Novel by Curtis Sittenfeld
Joyland by Stephen King
The Dinner by Herman Koch
Paris: the Novel by Edward Rutherfurd
No doubt you have many choices for summer action flicks this year. “Superman”, “Star Trek”, and the long-anticipated (at least by me) zombie movie “World War Z” are already out. Apocalyptic film “Pacific Rim” starring Charlie Hunnam and sci-fi epic “Elysium” starring Matt Damon will debut in August. If you are a fan of the AMC TV show, The Walking Dead, then I probably don’t have to convince you to see World War Z.
4. Visit your local farmer’s market
As emphasis on supporting local, sustainable resources continues to grow, more and more farmer’s markets are popping up around the country. Depending on your market, you may be able to find everything from the freshest local produce available to artisanal breads and farm fresh eggs. Get inspired to put healthy, summer delights on your table this summer and support your local community at the same time. Not sure where to find one? Go to www.localharvest.org for locations of local markets, farms, co-ops, and farm share opportunities.
5. Go on an ice cream road trip
Yes, you may have the local Dairy Queen right around the corner and, hey, I’ve been known to down a blizzard or two (or 500) in my lifetime. But there are so many magnificent mom and pop ice cream shops and dairies hidden around the country just waiting for you to discover them, why don’t you plan a road trip to try one or more of these magical wonders? Here are my faves:
6. Have some friends over for sangria and build-your-own tacos
7. Pick blueberries at a local farm and then make a refreshing treat
8. Get inspired by S’mores
I couldn’t resist adding these S’mores cookie bars, from www.chocolatechocolateandmore.com, to my summer bucket list. They look decadent. Plus, I think they would be the perfect treat to bring to a summer barbecue or pot luck.
9. Grill yourself some Mexican street corn
Mexican street corn is such a yummy, decadent treat to accompany any type of grilled meat.
10. Try a refreshingly fruity light wine
I just had Sokol Blosser’s Evolution and it is mighty fine. If you like sweet Rieslings like I do, but want something a bit more refined and smooth try this one.
